Immersive Technology Investment Accelerator: phase 2, SME projects – 3rd July deadline
Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will award up to £2 million from the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund’s Audience of the Future programme. This is for immersive technology research and development (R&D) projects.
This investment accelerator competition is for UK-based micro, small or medium sized enterprises (SMEs) who are looking for grant funding and who want to establish an equity relationship with a UK venture capital firm.
The competition aims to encourage investment in innovative immersive technology companies. These companies can be engaged in:
- immersive content production
- the delivery of new immersive products, services or platforms
- or the development of novel immersive software, hardware or devices
We recognise the potential value of creative companies who are supporting innovation through immersive technologies across a range of industries.
Companies can apply for simultaneous grant funding and private investment to cover their total eligible project costs.
This competition closes at midday 12pm UK time on the deadline stated.
Your project’s total eligible costs must be between £150,000 and £300,000.
This competition is a component of the £33 million ‘Audience of the Future Challenge’ funded through the UK government’s industrial strategy. Despite the growth of the immersive technology market, the finance and investment ‘ecosystem’ is undeveloped, particularly for early stage companies that need seed funding to support R&D and grow. This competition aims to address this by:
- encouraging early-stage private investment in innovative immersive content, products, platforms, services, software and hardware, to give companies greater confidence that investment will continue after the project funding
- giving management teams more time to run the business rather than continually chasing investment
- removing the need to find match funding
- giving companies direct access to investment partners’ commercial skills, knowledge and market opportunities
Your project must deliver innovation in one or more of the following areas:
- the creation and capture of future value from the production of immersive content, intellectual property (IP) or experiences through the adoption and implementation of immersive technology
- the development of tools, products, platforms or services for the creation, delivery or distribution of immersive content
- the development of new software, hardware and/or development methodology that will enable immersive content to be created faster, more efficiently or in new ways
Your project must have the potential to significantly advance the current ‘state of the art’ in the field. The application and market for these innovations can be in any market sector, and within business-to-business (B2B) or business-to-consumer (B2C) markets.
We define ‘immersive’ as technologies that blur the line between the physical world and the digital or simulated world. They create a sense of immersion, surrounding the audience or individual user so they feel completely involved in the experience.
Specific immersive, multisensory or interactive experiences mediated through technologies include:
- virtual, mixed and augmented reality
- haptics
- advanced visualisation
- other sensory interfaces
The aim of the investment accelerator is to fund innovative high-risk projects and invest in companies that have potential for growth. We will achieve this by working closely with our investor partners. We will assess applications using the standard Innovate UK assessment process, while the investors will use their own assessment techniques.
Both Innovate UK and the investor partner must identify a project as fundable before we can offer a grant. For the investor, this means taking the project forward to the ‘heads of terms’ stage with the applicant by 30 September 2019.
External, independent experts will assess the quality of your application. We will then select the projects to fund, building a portfolio of projectsthat:
- are high quality
- address the range of themes as described in the scope
- represent the potential for return on investment for the company and the UK
We are particularly encouraging new deal flow from the investor partners. SMEs who already have investment from one or more of the investors are also eligible. Preference may be given to first time investments in the event of a large number of high quality applications.
Subject to meeting the quality threshold and reaching ‘heads of terms’ with an investor partner we reserve the right to manage the portfolio to achieve the correct balance of projects and funding.
Investor partners
Learn about our investor partners, their interest in immersive technology and the value they can add to your business. We encourage you to contact the investor partners you are interested in before submitting your application to discuss whether they wish to invest in your company. Read each investor partner description to help you decide which is right for your project.

In-Car Gaming Challenge – 19th May deadline
- The In-Car Gaming Challenge aims to revolutionise car entertainment
- International competition to find the best gaming ideas for passenger cars, buses and mobile apps
- “Immersive gaming” makes it possible to feel totally involved in the game
- ESL as a cooperation partner
The most desirable luxury commodities in the 21st Century are private space and time. Automated vehicles are designed to offer people precisely that: the car is transformed from purely a means of transport to a private area of retreat. On the way to autonomous driving, Mercedes-Benz as a pioneer is going well beyond purely technical realisation and increasingly placing people at the centre of its deliberations. In the same way as the 1886 Patent Motor Car and its successors revolutionised personal mobility and therefore society as a whole, autonomously driving cars will also bring about major changes. This opens up a wealth of new possibilities in the interior for the car’s occupants to make use of the time gained by not having to actively drive the vehicle. One variant is this: gaming – ranging from attractive and entertaining games to modern learning programmes.
To find the most innovative concepts for completely new in-car experiences, Daimler is now starting a major competition for new entertainment ideas: the In-Car-Gaming Challenge. We are looking for exciting, creative ideas on all aspects of gaming. The best idea will also have an opportunity to find its way into the car. “With the In-Car Gaming Challenge, we are consciously following the principle of Open Innovation,” says Dr. Philipp Gneiting, Head of Open Innovation at Daimler. “It is above all extraordinary ideas with a high entertainment value that are most popular with car occupants. This is why we are looking for new and unconventional impulses which we will then jointly develop to the necessary maturity.”
Jerwood New Work Fund – 3rd June deadline
Funding for artists, artistic groups and artist-led organisations to undertake the research, development and creation of new work to enable a step-change in their practice and profile.
The Jerwood New Work Fund provides funding for the research, development, creation, production and dissemination of new work, with a focus on developing artistic practice.
It aims to advance artistic practice by encouraging applicants to investigate the creative process and take risks that lead to the development of unique new works destined to connect with a public audience…
This fund is focused on the initial creation process, but can support the full artistic cycle from the initial idea through to presentation. As with all our work, the priority is to support artists, curators and/or producers’ professional development, so we expect all proposals to demonstrate a significant step-change in their practice and/or career growth. We are comfortable not knowing what the outcome might be at the application stage.
Digital Placemaking – 10th May
“Digital Placemaking aims to enhance and deepen the relationship between people and places. We believe the best examples of digital placemaking are co-designed by different kinds of communities, using digital technology and creative solutions to improve or enhance the public experience of place.
Many of us already move seamlessly between digital and physical worlds in our day-to-day life. From Google Maps, to wearable technology, to playing Pokémon Go in the park; digital technology can make things easier, more enjoyable and more accessible. Of course, if it’s not done right, digital technology can also make things more confusing, alienating or overwhelming.
In the first Bristol+Bath Creative R+D Pathfinder, we’ll be bringing together new talent, university research and cutting edge industry and inclusion practice to address industry-wide challenges by making innovative work that finds its way to market and audiences.”
Sheff Doc Fest – Alternate Realities Commission – 25th February – extended to 6th March

Additionally MUTEK will be inviting the successful commission winner to their 20th edition in Montreal (20-25 August, 2019) to speak about the work and then tour their project to MUTEK Montreal in 2020…

Research Associate (Fixed Term)
The main focus of this job is to research and develop novel algorithms for reconstructing the 3D geometry of the environments from the captured imagery by extending multi-view geometry/photogrammetry techniques to handle dynamic 360° environments. Extending image-based rendering to 360° environments will then enable 6-DoF motion within a photorealistic 360° environment with high visual fidelity, and will result in detailed 360° environments covering all possible viewing directions.
